Trust the Process
“Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.”
These are the words of Jonas Salk who came up with the cure for Polio in the early 1950’s. Early summer in the first part of the 20th century was a time of great fear, for many young children would catch polio and end up paralyzed. By 1952 over 53,000 cases occurred and caused 3,500 deaths.
Salk, who was an epidemiologist by trade, set out to solve the problem in a controversial way by injecting healthy people with a version of polio that had been “killed.” He started with himself and others in his lab and then went on to his family. Talk about courage. Every one of them developed antibodies and had no negative reactions to the vaccine.
In 1954 about 1 million children ranging in age from six to nine were given the vaccine, eventually these polio pioneers were given the all clear and the vaccine was declared a success on April 12,1955. Interestingly, Salk never patented the vaccine or made any money from the discovery, he just wanted the world to have a cure.
Today we have a similar medical foe stalking the hallways of our buildings and public places, it appears to have the qualities of a master villain that dies and gets reborn with every human it encounters. The lottery of health has never been more present.
Jonas Salk founded the Salk Institute in 1963 in La Jolla and when he died in his 80’s he was working on a cure for AIDS. The institute’s work continues to this day.
One of the things we appreciate about his life is the process he and other scientists brought to what was perceived to be an unsolvable problem. The scientific method allows an entire community of global scientists to work towards a common goal. Our business processes are also based on a scientific method which our team focuses on every day to ensure we are identifying the highest quality companies to invest in.
“Trust the process” is often repeated as we navigate the wall of fear that surrounds our current pandemic and the economic crisis it has created. If you ever want to know more about our process, please email or call us and we will walk you through it.
